Schadenfreude
Note: The original title of this posting was "Chaudfroid," a perfectly acceptable English word that made no sense in the context of the show, but I figured since DOOL specializes in making no sense it fit. While I stumble around in a couple of languages other than English, German is not one of them. Thanks to two of our readers, Klaus and an anonymous reader who put us on the right track. According to those readers schadenfreude is a German word which means "to derive pleasure from other's suffering."
Bo comes into his living room to find Carly's clothes all ripped and scattered around. He runs upstairs calling for Ciara.
Vivian and Hope bump into each to her at the dock. As they do, Vivian drops her bag and they both stare at it like it's a nuclear device about ready to blow. Hope wonders what's in the bag as if it's any of her business.
Carly apologizes to Nathan for being hard on him, "I just want to make sure your head is 100% in the game."
"It is if the game is my rear end," says Nathan, "But why do you care so much about Melanie and me?"
Melanie reads a wedding magazine in the Java Café as Phillip walks in.
Brady and Rafe are also in the Java Café. Rafe tells him Arianna isn't going to prison. Brady wonders what strings he pulled, but Rafe says she never should have been headed there in the first place. He wonders if he did her any favors if Mr. Big wants revenge.
EJ is with Arianna at the pub. She's also worried Mr. Big might want to get back at her. EJ tells her not to worry.
Kate shows Stefano her dress for the wedding. Stefano compliments it as the doorbell rings. A delivery man hands him an envelope, "Stefano DiMera? Consider yourself served." Stefano gives him a look that could kill. "What," asks the delivery man, "No tip?"
Stefano closes the door, opens the envelope and chuckles, "Elvis is evicting me from my own home."Roman is on the phone at the cop-shop grilling Anna about her lie. Anna stares.
Vivian says the bag is a wedding present for Melanie.
Bo runs around yelling for Ciara. Ciara walks out of the kitchen brandishing a pair of scissors like Jack the Ripper ready to strike, "Daddy, I didn't do it!"
Bo assesses the situation. He figures Ciara is the only one in the house, hates Carly, and has the scissors in her hand. His instincts as a Salem cop kick in. He fails at an attempt to find his butt with both hands and also says, "I know you didn't do it." He sits her down on the couch and lets her know the big bad witch is moving in. Ciara ain' happy. Bo says she can talk to him about things, "You can ask me anything."
"Can I ask you to tell Carly to leave?" Ciara's a smart cookie.
"If it comes down to that — yes," says Bo, "But I think we should give it some time, "Carly is a nice person. You might like her."
Ciara yells, "NO! I hate her! I hate her!" Bo cradles.
Nathan plays the Bo and Hope card and tells Carly to back off. Daniel intervenes.
Vivian tells Hope about Carly ruining Melanie's wedding dress, "The poor child has had it so tough... growing up without a mother and her father recently died."
Hope says she's never heard Melanie mention her mother, "Do you know anything about her?"
Melanie lets it slip that Vivian is helping her with the wedding. Phillip plays the typical male and don' give a crap about the arrangements. He looks at the seating chart, "Of course, if you're going to use this seating, the wedding will be Armageddon."
Stefano insists Elvis can't get him out of his home, "Everything will change when Sydney is back."
Anna stammers and says she's in Salem wrapping up Tony's estate. Roman brings up Carrie and asks what she's been up to. "Not much," says Anna.
"Anna DiMera," says Roman, "Not up to something... I don't believe that for a second."
Anna backs off, "Well, you're right. I can't lie to you, can I?"
EJ suggests a drink to celebrate. Arianna says she can't because she's on duty, but EJ convinces her. Anna suggests Cerveza with lime. EJ thinks it sounds gross, "Why would you put lime into perfectly good beer?"
"I guess for the same reason you'd put vinegar on perfectly good french fries," says Anna. She prepares the concoction and they clink and drink. Brady and Rafe walk in on the disgusting display.
Kate tells Stefano Vivian has taken control of the wedding. Stefano thinks that's strange. He suggests Kate push Vivian aside and ingratiate herself to Melanie. "I can't do that," says Kate.
Stefano wrinkles his brow, "Are you intimidated? Snap out of it. Vivian is nothing but an opportunistic nutjob. You are Phillip's mother and a formidable woman in your own right. Also, you are now Mrs. Stefano DiMera."
Kate thinks it over, "Maybe I have been going about this the wrong way. I'll be back..."
Vivian says she doesn't know much about Melanie, "She's had some misery in her young life just like you did when your own mother was hit so tragically by a bus." She leaves as Hope contemplates throwing Vivian under a bus as well, "What are you up to, Vivian?"
Bo hugs Ciara, "Hate is a pretty strong word. Tell me the truth. Did you do this to Carly's clothes? You did, didn't you? Tell me why. Was it because you didn't want her to feel welcome?" Ciara decides to go upstairs. Bo says they will talk later.
Hope arrives. She finds the ripped up clothes. Bo rats out Ciara.
Nathan leaves. Carly tells Daniel, "I crossed the line when I came down so hard on Nathan. I should have backed off a bit and just made him mop up the blood that was all over the operating room after he skewered his patient."
Phillip and Melanie work on the seating charts. They discover there is no appropriate seating that will avoid confrontations, so they go back to Melanie's original plan. They smooch and decide to go home and take the smooching to the next level, but Kate comes in.
Brady congratulates Arianna. EJ asks, "So, Agent Hernandez, I don't suppose you have any additional information or leads on my daughter's whereabouts, do you?" Rafe mumbles. "I didn't think so," says EJ. He leaves.
Rafe turns and tells Arianna he's beginning to doubt himself. Arianna tries to encourage him, "You should feel good about the things you have accomplished. With an IQ in the low single digits, you should be proud you figured out how to open the door on the way in here."
Anna tells Roman things are complicated. Roman wonders if she was lying to him when they talked on Christmas. Anna says it's something about Sami, "And you are going to hate me when I tell you the truth."
Hope says she can't believe Ciara sliced and diced Carly's clothes. Bo tells her Carly is moving back in. Hope gives him a look that says she'd like to do some slicing and dicing herself.
Carly pulls Daniel aside and tells him she knows Nathan is a good guy, "And if he has feelings for Melanie needs to deal with them instead of daydreaming on the job." Daniel somehow figures this is about Melanie.
"Maybe it's about me," says Carly, "I married Victor and it was a disaster. Lawrence too. I Hope Melanie isn't making the same mistake."
"I don't think so," says Daniel, "Lawrence is dead and she certainly wouldn't marry Victor."
Kate offers to help with the wedding. Melanie decides this would be a good time to get outta Dodge, so she heads for the florist. Phillip asks Kate to share the mommy spotlight at the wedding with Vivian.
Vivian meets up with her shady connection and asks him to get whatever dastardly deed she needs him to do out of the way ASAP.
Rafe tells Arianna his only priority is to get Sydney back. He leaves. Brady moves in. Really moves in. Arianna is too professional to want to drink on duty, but she'll munch around on Brady anytime.
EJ returns home and finds Stefano in the rumpus room, "You will just not disappear will you?"
"This is my home," says Stefano, "I have given you time to mourn, but now its enough. Your time is done."
Anna tells Roman Carrie asked her to say hi to Sami, "But I can't." Roman urges her to go see Sami and Anna reluctantly agrees.
Arianna and Brady take the munching up to her room. Brady wonders if she's worried about Mr. Big. "No," says Arianna, "There is only one thing on my mind right now." That thing ensues.
Mr. Shady comes back with a wrapped present and hands it to Vivian, "Just remember... this is exceedingly lethal. Handle with caution."
Stefano rants at EJ, "Family is everything... Life is short... Clichés are a dime a dozen... What you are doing... This is chaudfroid."
"What the hell does that mean," asks EJ.
"Chaudfroid," says Stefano, "is the act of pulling a word out of your a** when you can't get one out of your brain. Revenge has it's own time and place but you seem to getting a perverse joy out of it. I'm not sure I know my own son."
Hope lectures Bo for asking Carly to move in without telling Ciara. She ramps up the verbal effervescence, "You invited a murderer into the house where our daughter is... After everything we've been through." She plays the Zack card, "How could you do it?"
"Carly won't hurt anyone," says Bo.
"Not if they die instantly."
Bo insists they're on the same side when it comes to Ciara but says Hope can't use Ciara as leverage against Carly.
Carly beats herself up for trying to give advice. Daniel says her situation isn't the same as Melanie's, "She's flighty and... let's face it... a bit of an operator."
Carly interrupts, "Daniel, Daniel... who are we to judge anyone?" Daniel backs off. "Thank you," Carly hugs him, "Thank you for (say it with her) being here for me... and everything. It means so much to me."
Kate refuses to walk down the aisle with Vivian. "I just want everyone to get along," whines Rodney King Kiriakis. Kate backs down and says she will be at the wedding.
"Melanie and I will start a family," says Phillip, "and just want everyone to get along." He leaves for a meeting.
Kate ponders, "I would not have to get along with you Vivian if you were not here." She runs home to bake brownies.
Vivian bustles into the Kiriakis den and shows Melanie her wedding dress is back and in good shape. Melanie says the more she gets to know Vivian the more she wants to be loved, "You are my guardian angel."
Rafe holds Sami's St. Anne's medal, "God... St. Anne... Grace... please guide me. Please help me bring Sydney home safely."
Anna prepares to go see Sami. She tells Sydney, "I'm going to see your mommy. You know... the one with all the extra kids she doesn't know what to do with. What your dad will say when he finds out I don't know. I'll see you later." She leaves. Sydney immediately calls Johnny and Allie to come over for the biggest party they ever had.
Bo and Hope discuss how to deal with Ciara. Hope decides she can't let Ciara come back into their house. Bo reminds her they agreed he could see Ciara whenever he wanted.
Hope changes the rules in the middle of the game, "That was then... this is now." Carly watches. Hope drops the boom, "I'm not sure you should see your daughter any more."
Vivian hands Melanie the lethal gift, "It's something old."
"A picture of you?" Vivian suggests she open it. Melanie stares.
Stefano tells EJ one day he will have to make a decision that his kids object to but he will know in his heart he is right. He will know he has to stand strong. Stefano leaves thinking they have an understanding.
Anna arrives at Sami's place. She knocks, but there is no answer, "Good she's not home."
Anna scribbles a note, "Sami, sorry about your baby. Too bad I missed you. XOXO, Anna." She slides it under the door and turns...

So while Anna is talking to Roman, and E.J. is with Arriana. Who's got the baby?
Well the kids on DOOL are never really looked after by anyone. Hence why the grow up all screwed up.
When Agent Hernandez has to start praying to Grace for help - well maybe Agent H you should just hang it up.
Anyone else get the sense that Stefano is up to something??? Don't tell me....he ends up actually kidnapping Sydney from the kidnapper (EJ). So contrived.
Still hoping they pull Tony out of thin air.
And the hits just keep on coming....
Seems Ciara is the only entertaining element on this episode ! "I hate her i hate her" lol.
Ok so the writers are well aware that Sami seems to not care about her children..so why writing her like that..mmmh..maybe for the continuation of the storyline she will end up hospitalized, in a nuthouse, unable to take care of her children or even herself..actually it could be fun with no boring or evil men hung on her but just nuts pals..oh i am all for that !!
Hope wonders what's in the bag as if it's any of her business.
This plot device is so lame, and the lazy writers continue to use it over and over and over and over and over and over again. At some point, you would think they would even be tired of penning those questions. The audience is certainly sick of hearing them.
"I just want to make sure your head is 100% in the game."
"It is if the game is my rear end," says Nathan.
On my!!! Very good Prevuze!!!
Brady wonders what strings he pulled, but Rafe says she never should have been headed there in the first place.
Let’s see. Rafe is a federal law enforcement officer, and G-men wage the war on drugs in this country. Since Arianna didn’t take Nancy Reagan’s advice to “just say no”, she ended up in the big house for dealing and using. What part “she got what she deserved” doesn’t Rafe understand? This should be a no-brainer for Rafe. Since he is already brain-free, the concept should be simple for a self-righteous dude like him.
Roman is on the phone at the cop-shop grilling Anna about her lie. Anna stares.
If a woman got a phone call from a former lover and told him she was in Spain, it’s probably because she didn’t want to talk to him or see him. Generally, most guys can be expected to pick up on that fact immediately. In Anna’s case, she’s taken down to the station for questioning. Can Roman say “abuse of power”?
Brady moves in. Really moves in. Arianna is too professional to want to drink on duty, but she'll munch around on Brady anytime.
PDAs are so gauche!!! While on duty, Arianna has no problem with either munching or boinking Brady. Since she doesn't spend much time working, I certainly hope that Caroline is paying Arianna minimum wage.
“This is chaudfroid."
"What the hell does that mean," asks EJ.
"Chaudfroid," says Stefano, "is the act of pulling a word out of your a** when you can't get one out of your brain.”
I had to Google that word, and I still don’t quite understand the reference. In other words, this is cooked fowl served cold with aspic. What the bleep?
DOOL = Groundhog Day II – damn straight Prevuze!!!!!!!
Do we know WHO Melanie's real father is?? Do you think it could be Daniel?
His instincts as a Salem cop kick in. He fails at an attempt to find his butt with both hands.
So sad, so true, so damn funny.
"I guess for the same reason you'd put vinegar on perfectly good french fries," says Anna.

Revenge has its own time and place but you seem to getting a perverse joy out of it.
Like father, like son Stefano. Like father, like son.
Why in the world would Mr. Big want revenge? Arianna never outed him. Apparently the only member of the entire drug network that got pinched was Troy. And, given his last actions, Troy wasn't the most reliable cog on the wheel.
Prevuze (and Bulldog) kicked some serious butt with the pictures today. Loved the papyrus birth certificate and the odor eaters. If only the show was that entertaining!
Word verification: unalasta As in U na lasta through this episode without falling asleep, U na better person than me!
So while Anna is talking to Roman, and E.J. is with Arriana. Who's got the baby?
On occasion, for the purpose of humor I might just stretch the truth a bit and either omit or augment certain scenarios in order to do that. This might... might... be one of those instances and it could be... maybe... that Anna arranged for a baby sitter. I don't believe that neglecting to include that detail changed the story in any way nor did it change the fact that the kids in Salem are, on the whole, criminally neglected. In other words, it was a heck of a lot funnier to forget to tell you she got a babysitter.
Like you, I had to Google the word. In the dialogue, both EJ and Stefano pronounced it "chaud-en-froid" as if it were German. So I Googled that, too, and it took me right back to "chaudfroid." Having gone that far I read some things about it and there are a few obscure places that make oblique references to a link between "chaudfroid" and the hackneyed "revenge is best served cold." Still, however, any link was not explained. Likewise, I also wound up not really getting it, leading me to the conclusion that Chaudfroid is the act of pulling a word out of your a** when you can't get one out of your brain.
DOOL = Groundhog Day II – damn straight Prevuze!!!!!!!
And a happy groundhog day to all.
Contrary to reports in the media, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today. He did, however see that we were still dragging out the Syd-napping and it so repulsed him that he dove back into his burrow for six more weeks hoping when he emerges the next time it will be over.
Re: Chaudfroid. It's probably schadenfreude, which is a German word which means to derive pleasure from others suffering.
"But why do you care so much about Melanie and me?"
Why does anyone care.
Rafe says she never should have been headed there in the first place.
I guess Ariana was framed. Poor her.
Ciara yells, "NO! I hate her! I hate her!"
Manners! Carly might have to give some sort of blood transfusion soon.
Vivian is nothing but an opportunistic nutjob.
That fits everyone.
"I crossed the line when I came down so hard on Nathan.
Of course, never mind that someones life is on the line. As long as Nathan is happy!
"You should feel good about the things you have accomplished.
Such as?
Hope says she can't believe Ciara sliced and diced Carly's clothes.
I hear children pick up habits and moods from their parents... just sayin'.
"You invited a murderer into the house where our daughter is
If that matters, why is Ciara near Victor and Vivian?
"I'm not sure you should see your daughter any more."
I have no clue what Bo ever saw in Hope, or what hell is wrong with Justin and Patrick.
As much as I'm enjoying the cold fowl cooked with aspic references (lol), I believe the actual word is "schadenfreude," which means enjoying the misery of others. Of course, this is DOOL, so who knows.
Hope wonders what's in the bag as if it's any of her business. OMG! I'm just going to have to say it or bust, Hope is the most annoying, irritating pain in the rear they've ever had on the show. And that's considering quite a few annoying, irritating pain in the rears!!!!
OK, rant over. Loved the papyrus reference. HAHAHAHA
Arriving late to the party, most of my comments and and questions have already been addressed. But not my favorite Prevuism which is still making me chuckle:"I just want everyone to get along," whines Rodney King Kiriakis." Prevuze - the best Black History Month reference on the internet®.
Thanks for the great recap today! :D
Speaking of Schadenfreude, it's a song in the musical Avenue Q. It's between Gary Coleman (yes, THAT Gary Coleman. He's a character in the musical, played by a woman) and a puppet. Hope you like it!

Just a thought...which of course the writes never seem to have:
We only have Carly's word that Melanie's father is someone other than Lawrence. Now Viv wants to 'off' her. What a interesting twist it would be if Melanie WAS actually Lawrence's daughter and Carly was trying to protect her from the Alamain family. Hmmmm.....
Doolfan65
Carly interrupts, "Daniel, Daniel... who are we to judge anyone?" Daniel backs off.
First Carly crying over the fact that Chloe can't have Daniel's baby and now she says this...can this mean Dr.Dan the Man is Melanie's father? I think so...
Thanks to Klaus, anonymous and I Challenge... for helping to clarify "Schadenfreude." Thanks to your input for the first time ever I actually changed the title of the posting.
You know, I was kind of groovin' on Chaudenfroid - "cooked fowl served cold with aspic". Given DOOL it made as much sense as anything. Like, for instance, Stefano was planning his dinner menu.
KOTU
Verification: tanab - It's about summer and time for all those shirtless tanab's to show up!
